El profesor Giuseppe Nesi, Catedrático de la Universidad de Trento, ha sido elegido miembro de la Comisión de Derecho Internacional el 12 de noviembre de 2021 por el grupo de «Europa Occidental y Otros Estados», obteniendo 152 votos.

La Comisión de Derecho Internacional (CDI), en particular, se ha beneficiado del protagonismo papel destacado, en algunas de sus tareas más complejas y significativas, de miembros italianos , como Roberto Ago, Gaetano Arangio-Ruiz y Giorgio Gaja, entre otros. Tras una cuidadosa evaluación de los candidatos más cualificados Italia nombró al profesor Giuseppe Nesi, un renombrado académico y con una sólida experiencia académica y en asuntos diplomáticos. Ha sido vicepresidente de la Sociedad Italiana de Derecho Internacional y Derecho de la Unión Europea. Es miembro de varias asociaciones académicas, como la Sociedad Europea de Derecho Internacional, la Sociedad Francesa de Derecho Internacional, el Instituto Internacional de Derecho Humanitario, la Asociación de Derecho Internacional y la Sociedad Italiana de Organización Internacional, que es la representante de la UNA para Italia. Forma parte del Consejo de Administración de la Asociación Internacional de Facultades de Derecho y actualmente es el editor general del Anuario Italiano de Derecho Internacional.

Además de su labor docente e investigadora, el profesor Nesi ha sido asesor jurídico del cuerpo diplomático italiano y de instituciones internacionales. Desde 1992 es asesor jurídico del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y Cooperación Internacional de Italia. Entre sus funciones se encuentra la de Asesor Jurídico de la Misión de Italia en Nueva York (2002-2010); en 2010-11 fue nombrado Asesor Jurídico del Presidente de la Asamblea General de la ONU. Durante su estancia en Nueva York, participó en numerosas negociaciones bilaterales y multilaterales sobre cuestiones delicadas y complejas, y representó a Italia en todas las actividades de la Sexta Comisión de la Asamblea General y órganos conexos. Fue vicepresidente del Comité Especial sobre la Carta de las Naciones Unidas y sobre el fortalecimiento del papel de la Organización, y fue asesor jurídico de la Delegación italiana en el Consejo de Seguridad.
